Bringing your dog to the beach is one of life's simple joys. But Alabama's Gulf Coast is more than just a playground for pups. It's a vital habitat for rare birds, sea turtles, and the endangered Alabama Beach Mouse. Here's how you can make the most of your beach visit with your furry friend while keeping wildlife safe.

Animal Wellfare-Everyone's Responsibility

Why Protecting Wildlife Matters

Dogs are wonderful and lovable companions. However, their natural instinct to hunt, chase, and dig can endanger shorebirds, sea turtles, and nests, decreasing the survival of wildlife on the beach.

When dogs chase shorebirds, nests and young are unprotected and vulnerable to the heat and other predators. As a result, birds may abandon nests or whole colonies due to disturbance from dogs. When these birds are disturbed, they use vital energy for migration and nesting. Shorebirds are federally and stately protected species.

Endangered sea turtles can also be disturbed by dogs on the beach at night. Female sea turtles may abandon their nesting attempts, returning to the water without laying their eggs.

The endangered Alabama Beach Mouse is also vulnerable to disturbances at night by dogs.

Endangered Species on Alabama’s Beaches

Many wildlife species, including several endangered and threatened species, depend on Alabama's beaches for survival.

Over 30 species of shorebirds and seabirds use beach habitats for nesting, resting, and finding food.  Some birds also use the beach during winter or for rest during long migrations.

Sea turtles use Alabama's beaches as nesting sites from March to October.  They dig nests in the sand and lay their eggs, which incubate and then produce hatchlings.

Beach mice live in and use beach habitats, specifically coastal dunes, for their entire life cycle.
